Abu Dhabi Tourist Club Area
AI Meena is the name given to the whole of the north eastern tip of Abu Dhabi island. The Tourist Club Area is an unofhcial title given to the area from the Abu Dhabi Tourist Club to the Beach Rotana Hotel and down to Al Salam Street. Although the Tourist Club is currently closed for redevelopment, this bustling area is packed with high rise apartment blocks, luxury hotels and some top shopping spots TheTourist Club Area's main draws are Abu Dhabi Mall for its great Shopping, multi-screen cinema and cafes; the Dhabi Cooperative Complex (p.1 38), for more chances to shop and Khalifa center
(just behind the old Co- op) which is packed with souvenir shops. Some of Abu Dhbi's top hotels are in this area. They are known for their great restaurants and bars making the streets around them very popular
in the evening The Beach Rotana Hotel & Towers is linked to to Abu Dhabi Mall very handy if your are weighed down with shopping bags - and is home to ever popu|ar Traders Vics as well as many other great restaurants. The Culinary Village at Le Meridien just down the road also has a number of good restaurants A you can choose between French, Indian or excellent Italian at Pappagallo with its picturesque terrace. Abu Dhabi Airport City Terminal is across the road from the Beach Rotana Hotel. Buses leave from here on a regular basis to Abu Dhabi International Airport and most airlines have check in facilities here too.
AI Meena begins as an area of high—rises and ends at Port Zayed (a working port). Once you leave the high·—rises behind, the area on the right is best known for the Carpet Souk Most of what is sold is mass-produced but there are gems to be found if you know what you're looking for.
The Club, one of the capita|'s most p0PU'a' health and beach clubs, is alS0 here but unfortunately is for members only. To the left, past the Customs building, is port Zayed. This working Port is home to the Fish Souk the odours emanating from here can politely be described as ‘coIourfuli The adjacent Vegetable Souk is Probably a more pleasantly fragrant way to experience the hustle and bustle of a traditional market. Further on, you can browse through an impressive range of goods imported directly from Iran at the aptly named Iranian Souk. The Mina Centre, in the heart of the port, is a huge mall with a great bookshop (Jarir Bookstore), a supermarket, a chiIdren's amusement centre and a crazy-golf course. The dhow harbour is particularly atmospheric at sunset when the fleet returns. The harbour is also the starting point for a number of dinner cruises, with the one run by the Al Dhafra seafood restaurant being very popular - it sails along the corniche every evening. Even though there are some beautiful sights in the port, photography is not allowed in the area as Port Zayed is a working port with security restrictions in place.
